Pediatric Dentist in the West End of Richmond, VA

Children’s Dental Care for West End, Tuckahoe, and Henrico Families

Looking for a pediatric dentist in Richmond’s West End? Our Gaskins Road office, just north of Patterson Avenue near Tuckahoe, is a pediatric-only practice where three specialty-trained children’s dentists see kids from the first tooth through the teen years. It is one of two RPDO pediatric offices in Henrico County, and our orthodontists are a few minutes away on Patterson Avenue, so when braces come up your child stays with the same practice and the same chart.

West End families choose us because we are privately owned, we accept Virginia Medicaid for children’s dental care, and we have been caring for Richmond kids for more than 100 years. Not sure which Henrico office is closer? Compare both on our pediatric dentist in Henrico, VA page.

Why families end up calling the Gaskins Road office

A children's dentist in the West End usually gets found one of these ways.

  • The pediatrician at the one-year checkup asked whether you had a dentist picked out yet, and you did not.
  • Your family dentist is great with you but visibly relieved when your five-year-old's appointment is over.
  • A lactation consultant mentioned a possible tongue-tie and told you to have a pediatric dentist look at it.
  • Your child needs a filling and the word "sedation" came up, and you want someone who does this with kids all day.
  • You have two or three kids at different ages and would rather book them all at one office on one afternoon.
  • You are on Cardinal Care Smiles and the last two offices you called were not accepting new Medicaid patients.

All of those are common reasons families first walk through our door, and wherever your child is starting from, we will help you figure out the next step.

The pediatric dentists at Gaskins Road

Three of them, all pediatric specialists, so a returning family can keep the dentist their kid already knows and a new one is not waiting on a single doctor's calendar.

About Dr. Thornton

What is different about the Gaskins Road office

Specific to this building, not the practice in general.

Waiting room at Richmond Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics with kid-sized seating and a fish tank
An RPDO waiting room. Every office is set up the same way, for kids first.

Pediatric only

No adult patients, no adult schedule. The rooms, the chairs, the X-ray settings, and the pace of the day are all built around children.

Three pediatric specialists

Dr. Chopra, Dr. Eddleton, and Dr. Thornton all completed pediatric residencies. Three doctors in one office also means you are not waiting on a single dentist's calendar.

Medicaid, without an asterisk

Cardinal Care Smiles, DentaQuest, and Doral, same doctors and same days as everyone else. How it works at RPDO.

Orthodontist on the same chart

When braces come up, the consultation at Patterson Avenue starts with your child's full dental history already open. Nothing gets re-done and nothing gets lost in a referral.

Owned by the dentists

RPDO is not part of a dental group. Treatment decisions are made by the person in the room with your child, and the doctors you meet this year are the ones you will see next year.

More than a century in Richmond

RPDO has treated Richmond children for over 100 years. Plenty of West End parents bringing their kids to Gaskins Road were RPDO patients themselves.

Pediatric Dental Care in Richmond's West End

Gaskins Road is a pediatric-only office, which changes more than the decor. Nobody here splits the day between adult crowns and toddler exams. Dr. Chopra, Dr. Eddleton, and Dr. Thornton each completed a pediatric residency after dental school, and the whole team, front desk to hygienists, works with children and only children. That is the difference between a dentist who can see kids and a children's dentist.

Checkups and Cleanings

Twice-a-year exams and cleanings with fluoride, and sealants on the six-year and twelve-year molars as soon as they come in, which is when they are most likely to pick up a cavity.

Why we seal molars early

Your Child's First Visit

Bring them by their first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth. At that age a visit is mostly a lap exam, a look at how teeth are coming in, and brushing advice for you. Ten minutes, no drama.

What happens at a first visit

Fillings and Restorative Care

White fillings, stainless steel or white crowns for baby molars, and pulp treatment when decay reaches the nerve. Baby teeth hold space for adult teeth, so we fix them rather than wait them out.

How we treat cavities in kids

Behavior Guidance

We explain and show every tool before we use it, tell kids how long each step takes, and slow down when a child needs us to. Most children who hated their last dentist do fine here by the second visit.

Our approach to nervous kids

Sedation Options

Nitrous oxide for a child who is anxious but cooperative, and other sedation options for a very young child with a lot of work to do, or a child who cannot tolerate treatment awake. We explain the choice before you decide.

Sedation dentistry for children

Special Needs Dentistry

Quieter rooms, a first appointment that is just a tour if that is what your child needs, and a team that asks what works at home before trying anything. Children with autism, sensory differences, developmental delays, and complex medical histories are regular patients here.

Dental care for special needs

Tongue-Ties and Lip-Ties

If nursing is painful or a baby is not gaining weight, a tie may be part of the reason. We see infants referred by lactation consultants and pediatricians, and release ties when it will help.

Tongue-tie and lip-tie care

Pediatric Dental Emergencies

A permanent tooth knocked out at soccer practice, a chipped front tooth from the monkey bars, swelling that showed up overnight. Call us before you drive anywhere. Some of these have a clock on them and we will tell you what to do first.

Kids' dental emergencies in Richmond

Virginia Medicaid is accepted at Gaskins Road

There is no Medicaid day, no Medicaid provider, and no back-of-the-line scheduling. A child on Cardinal Care Smiles books the same way, sees Dr. Chopra, Dr. Eddleton, or Dr. Thornton, and gets the same treatment plan as any other patient in the building. Bring the card to the first visit and the front desk handles the rest.

Want to get your child on the Gaskins Road schedule?

Infants, toddlers, grade-schoolers, and teens are all welcome as new patients. If there is something we should know before the visit, a past bad experience, sensory needs, a medical condition, put it in the request and we will read it before you arrive.

What a first appointment at Gaskins Road looks like

Here is the whole thing, so nobody in the car is guessing.

RPDO pediatric dentist showing a toddler a dental mirror during a first visit
A first visit at RPDO usually starts with showing the child every tool before it goes anywhere near their mouth.
1

Before you come

Send a request with your child's age and anything that would help us. We confirm the time and get you the new patient forms ahead of the visit so the first ten minutes are not spent on a clipboard.

2

At the office

Your child meets the hygienist and the dentist, gets a look around, and sits in the chair when they are ready, which for a two-year-old may mean on your lap. Cleaning, exam, fluoride, and X-rays when they are needed.

3

Before you leave

The dentist walks you through what they saw, what to do at home, and whether anything needs treatment. If it does, you get the cost and the options that day, not in a letter.

Bedtime brushing feels like a wrestling match?

It is the single most common complaint we hear from parents of two- and three-year-olds at Gaskins Road, and it is not a sign you are doing anything wrong. Here is what our pediatric dentists tell families.

  1. Two brushings, one of them yours. Let your toddler brush first, then you finish. Their turn builds the habit, your turn gets the teeth clean.
  2. Knee to knee. Sit facing another adult with your knees touching, lay the child across your laps, and brush from behind their head. It is the position we use in the office.
  3. A rice-sized smear of fluoride toothpaste under three, a pea-sized amount from three on. Spitting is a skill that comes later.
  4. Same time, same order, every night. Bath, pajamas, teeth, book. Toddlers fight surprises more than they fight toothbrushes.
  5. Two minutes is the goal, not the rule. A quick but thorough pass beats a long standoff. Ask us to show you at the next visit.

More in our guide to brushing a toddler's teeth, or bring the question to your child's next checkup.

When Braces Come Up

There are no orthodontists at Gaskins Road, on purpose. This office is set up for pediatric dentistry, and the orthodontic side of the practice is a few minutes south at our Patterson Avenue office, where Dr. Bibona sees patients on Mondays and Wednesdays, or on West Broad at Short Pump. Because it is one practice, the handoff is a scheduling note, not a referral. Your child's X-rays, growth records, and history are already in the same chart the orthodontist opens.

The age-seven check happens here

Our pediatric dentists look at bite and jaw development at every cleaning. Around seven, if something looks worth an orthodontist's opinion, we say so and book the free consultation for you. Most kids are told to come back in a year or two.

What early treatment is for

Braces and aligners nearby

Metal and ceramic braces, and clear aligners including Invisalign, at Patterson Avenue and Short Pump. Cleanings stay at Gaskins Road during treatment, and the two teams talk to each other about what they see.

Braces in Richmond

Snoring and mouth breathing

If your child snores, sleeps with their mouth open, or wakes up tired, mention it at the cleaning. Sometimes the jaw is part of the story, and the orthodontic consultation includes an airway check at no charge.

Airway-focused orthodontics

One thing worth knowing before you ask: the answer to "does my seven-year-old need braces" is usually no, or not yet, and we would rather tell you that than start something early.

Free, no referral needed

Orthodontic consultations a few minutes from Gaskins Road

If braces are on your mind for your child, your teen, or yourself, book a consultation at our Patterson Avenue office. You leave with a yes, a not yet, or a no, and a price if it is a yes.

  • Bite and airway looked at
  • Total cost before anything starts
  • Same chart as your child's dentist

Wondering about price first? Read what braces cost in Richmond, or see all of our Richmond orthodontic locations.

What changes when a child gets a dental home early

Not a scare tactic. Just the two patterns we see most often at this office.

A pediatric dentist at RPDO laughing with a young girl in the dental chair
This is what a fifth visit looks like when the first one happened at age one.

First visit at five or six

  • The first appointment is also the first cavity, so the chair and the drill get introduced on the same day.
  • Six-year molars that could have been sealed when they came in have spent a year or two unprotected.
  • A thumb habit or developing crossbite that a pediatric dentist would have watched from age three can already be an orthodontic case.
  • The child's memory of "the dentist" is a filling, and that memory is hard to overwrite.

First visit at one

  • By the time there is anything to fix, the child has had four or five boring visits and trusts the room.
  • Sealants, fluoride, and brushing habits are in place before the cavity-prone years start.
  • Bite and jaw development gets watched every six months, so nothing is a surprise at seven.
  • You have a number to call when something happens, and the people who answer know your child.

West End office FAQs

What parents ask when they call the Gaskins Road office.

Where is the RPDO West End office?

2560 Gaskins Road, Richmond, VA 23238, on the stretch of Gaskins between Patterson Avenue and Ridgefield Parkway in Henrico County. Regency and St. Mary's Hospital are both a few minutes away. Parking is free and right at the door.

Is the Gaskins Road office pediatric dentistry only?

Yes. This office has three pediatric dentists and no orthodontists. When your child needs braces or an orthodontic opinion, the consultation happens at our Patterson Avenue office a few minutes south, using the same patient record.

Do you accept Medicaid at the West End office?

Yes. Gaskins Road takes Virginia Medicaid for children's dental care, including Cardinal Care Smiles (the plan formerly called Smiles For Children), DentaQuest, and Doral. Coverage does not change which doctor you see or when you can be seen. More on Medicaid dental care for kids in Richmond.

What is the right age for a first dental visit?

One. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry says by the first birthday or within six months of the first tooth, whichever comes first. If your child is older and has never been, that is fine too, and it is a common way families find us. What the first visit involves.

What areas does your West End office serve?

Mostly the near West End of Henrico County: Tuckahoe, Westhampton, Gayton, Ridgefield, Canterbury, Mooreland Farms, Raintree, and Pemberton, plus families from the city's west side along River Road and Patterson. If you live out past Pump Road, our Short Pump office may be the shorter drive.

My child is terrified of the dentist. Can you help?

This is a large part of what a pediatric office does. We start slow, sometimes with a visit that is nothing but a look around, use tell-show-do at every step, and have nitrous oxide and other sedation options when a child needs treatment they cannot sit through awake. Tell us about the fear when you book so the first visit is planned around it.

Do you see children with special needs?

Yes, regularly. Autism, sensory processing differences, developmental delays, and complex medical histories are all part of a normal week at Gaskins Road. Ask for a longer or quieter appointment and we will set it up. Our special needs dental care.

What ages do you see at the West End office?

Infants through teenagers. Around eighteen, when a patient is ready for an adult dentist, we help them find one and send the records over.

What should I do if my child has a dental emergency?

Call (804) 741-2226 before anything else. A knocked-out permanent tooth has the best chance if it is back in place within an hour, and we will tell you how to handle it on the way in. We keep same-day time open for urgent pediatric visits. What counts as a dental emergency for a child.

πŸͺ₯ An electric toothbrush. The oscillating or sonic motion cleans around brackets, wires, and clear aligner trays far better than a manual brush, which means less plaque and fewer stains by the time treatment's done.
🦷 The early evaluation(and treatment if necessary). A first check-in around age 7 (the age the American Association of Orthodontists recommends) catches bite and spacing patterns while your child's jaw is still growing... which often means a shorter, simpler treatment plan down the road.
πŸ” Replacing a lost retainer... right away. It's tempting to put it off, but teeth can start shifting fast without one. Paying for a new retainer now almost always costs less than paying to fix a shifted smile later.
πŸ’§ A water flosser. Not just for braces... this is a whole-family upgrade that gets food and plaque out from places a toothbrush can't reach.
