Frequently Asked Questions

We want you to feel informed about your child’s treatment and confident in your experience with us. Below, you’ll find answers to some frequently asked questions about pediatric dentistry and orthodontics.

Yes. Our Mechanicsville office accepts Virginia Medicaid, including Cardinal Care Smiles (formerly Smiles For Children), DentaQuest, and Doral. Medicaid families see the same doctors and get the same appointment availability as everyone else. Learn more about pediatric dental care with Medicaid in Richmond.

Our office is on Right Flank Road just off I-295, an easy drive for families in Mechanicsville, Atlee, Studley, Cold Harbor, and across Hanover County. Many of our patients also come from eastern Henrico County.

Yes. Our team adapts visits for children with autism, sensory differences, and other developmental or behavioral needs, and sedation options are available when helpful. Tell us about your child when you book and we will plan the visit around them. Learn more about our special needs dental care.

Sedation can help children with special needs, kids with severe dental anxiety, or patients undergoing longer procedures stay comfortable and calm during treatment.

Yes. Mechanicsville is one of our four orthodontic locations, with braces, clear aligners, and early treatment for kids, teens, and adults. Orthodontic consultations are complimentary, and every consultation includes a bite and airway evaluation.

We recommend that you bring your child for their first dental visit with us after their first tooth erupts or by their first birthday.

We are always happy to talk about ways to improve your child’s dental health during your visits with us. We believe that patient education is important for a lifetime of excellent dental health. At home, we recommend supervising your child’s brushing and flossing, even if they are old enough to do it themselves. Make sure they are brushing their teeth with a fluoride toothpaste twice a day, two minutes each time. They should also floss once a day, preferably at night. Eating a healthy diet, and one that’s lower in sugar, is an excellent way to have not only better dental health, but better overall health, as well. Lastly, make sure you are bringing your child to their regular check-ups with us every six months.

At Richmond Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we recommend that your child has their initial consultation with us at age seven. By this time, your child should have a mix of baby and permanent teeth, which will allow our orthodontists to determine if your child has any early orthodontic issues that we need to address.

Everyone is different, which means that every orthodontic case is different, too. Depending on your case, you could spend more or even less time in treatment. We recommend speaking to your orthodontists in order to get an accurate timeline.

There are many reasons dental sedation may be beneficial for your child. Sedation can help children with special needs, kids with severe dental anxiety, or patients undergoing longer procedures stay comfortable and calm during treatment.

Our pediatric dentists see children from their very first tooth through the teen years. The AAPD recommends a first visit by age one. For orthodontics, there is no upper limit. We treat kids, teens, and adults at this office.

Toothbrushing time doesn't have to turn into a wrestling match every night. If your toddler treats the toothbrush like public enemy #1, you're in very good company... this is one of the most common stages parents go through, and it passes faster than you think. Here are 5 tips our team recommends for making toothbrushing time easier:
1️⃣ Let them go first. Hand over the toothbrush and let your toddler "brush" (aka chew the bristles) before you do the real pass. It gives them a sense of control, and kids who feel involved tend to resist less.
2️⃣ Offer small choices within the routine. "Top teeth or bottom teeth first?" Toddlers are wired to want independence... giving them a choice (that still ends in clean teeth) can cut down on the power struggle.
3️⃣ Make it a shared moment. Brush your own teeth alongside them. Toddlers imitate what they see, so brushing together helps it feel like a normal part of the routine instead of something being done to them.
4️⃣ Bring in their favorite songs or shows. A 2-minute timer set to a favorite tune (or a quick episode about healthy teeth) can turn brushing time into something they actually look forward to.
5️⃣ Remember: one hard night doesn't undo a consistent routine. Progress isn't always a straight line, and that's okay. What matters most is staying consistent night after night... the little wins add up.

Brushing battles are so normal, and our team is always here to help make the routine easier for your family. 🦷✨

What does it mean to be honored by an organization built entirely around courage? Connor's Heroes recently recognized our team as their “Hero Group of the Year” for the work we've done together, and while we're deeply grateful for the award, the truth is that the real reward has always been the partnership itself. Every visit, every smile, every small moment of connection with the families we've had the privilege of working alongside has meant more to our team than any recognition ever could. We're proud to stand alongside an organization doing such meaningful work in our community, and we're even prouder to call ourselves part of the Connor's Heroes family.

Did you know an impacted tooth doesn't always mean surgery? 🦷✨
This transformation is proof that patience, planning, and the right treatment approach can make all the difference.

When this patient came to us, she had an impacted upper canine that hadn't erupted on its own, plus a Class III (or underbite) tendency and some crowding. Many families hear "impacted tooth" and immediately think surgical exposure is the only path forward... but that wasn't the case here.

💥Through 24 months of guided treatment with metal braces, we were able to create the space and movement needed for that canine to erupt naturally, no exposure procedure, no restorative work needed. Just a carefully guided plan that let her own tooth do what it was always meant to do.
The result? A full, balanced smile with all her natural teeth right where they belong. 💛

📌Wondering if your child's tooth development is on track, or if an impacted tooth might need a specialist's eye? That's exactly what we're here for.
