FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We want you to feel informed about your child’s treatment and confident in your experience with us. Below, you’ll find answers to some frequently asked questions about pediatric dentistry and orthodontics.

We recommend that you bring your child for their first dental visit with us after their first tooth erupts or by their first birthday.

We are always happy to talk about ways to improve your child’s dental health during your visits with us. We believe that patient education is important for a lifetime of excellent dental health. At home, we recommend supervising your child’s brushing and flossing, even if they are old enough to do it themselves. Make sure they are brushing their teeth with a fluoride toothpaste twice a day, two minutes each time. They should also floss once a day, preferably at night. Eating a healthy diet, and one that’s lower in sugar, is an excellent way to have not only better dental health, but better overall health, as well. Lastly, make sure you are bringing your child to their regular check-ups with us every six months.

At Richmond Pediatrics Dentistry & Orthodontics, we recommend that your child has their initial consultation with us at age seven. By this time, your child should have a mix of baby and permanent teeth, which will allow our orthodontists to determine if your child has any early orthodontic issues that we need to address.

Everyone is different, which means that every orthodontic case is different, too. Depending on your case, you could spend more or even less time in treatment. We recommend speaking to your orthodontists in order to get an accurate timeline.

There are many reasons dental sedation may be beneficial for your child. Treating children with special needs, an extreme fear or severe anxiety of going to the dentist, or those undergoing procedures where it may be helpful in reducing pain or comfort or to help manage a child’s behaviors are all goals of sedation dentistry.

🦷 Transformation Tuesday: Meet Brent

✨ Class III bite corrections are some of the more complex cases we treat, and Brent's was a good example of what a well-coordinated treatment plan can accomplish. He came in as an adult with a Class III bite relationship and crowding, a combination that requires careful planning well beyond simply straightening teeth.

☀️ Clear aligners were used throughout his treatment, along with interproximal reduction (IPR), a precise process of creating small amounts of space between teeth to allow them to move into proper alignment without extraction. Once his orthodontic work was complete, Brent worked with his general dentist on build-ups to refine his bite and bring everything into its final, functional position.

📸 That kind of collaboration between an orthodontist and a general dentist is exactly how complex adult cases get the results they deserve. Orthodontics moves the teeth into the right place. Restorative dentistry finishes the story. When those two pieces of a treatment plan are coordinated well, the outcome reflects it.

☀️ Am I too old for braces as an adult? It's one of the most Googled orthodontic questions out there... and the answer might surprise you.

📌 Adult orthodontic treatment is more common than most people realize. Whether you're 25 or 55, the biology of tooth movement works the same way. What changes is the conversation... and at RPDO, we think that conversation is always worth having.
If you've been wondering whether it's too late, it's not. It's just the right time to ask.

💥 Did you know we can check in on your smile... without you ever leaving your house?
🦷 At RPDO, we use at-home dental monitoring so your treatment never has to wait for your next appointment. Here's how it works: once a week, you use a simple attachment on your own phone to scan your teeth. Those scans go straight to our team through an app, and the docs reviews them to make sure your teeth are moving right on track... and staying healthy the whole way through.
⏰ If anything needs a tweak, we catch it early and adjust your treatment plan in real time. That means fewer unnecessary visits, smarter progress, and a finish line that stays in sight.

Orthodontic treatment that works around your life. That's what we're here for, serving families in Richmond, VA.
