Bi-Specialty Practice vs. Two Separate Offices
| RPDO (Bi-Specialty) | Two Separate Practices | |
|---|---|---|
| Records & History | ✓ Shared between your child's dentist and orthodontist — nothing falls through the cracks | ✗ You transfer records manually and hope nothing is missed |
| Coordinated Care | ✓ Your pediatric dentist and orthodontist collaborate on timing, treatment, and overall oral health | ✗ Two providers who may never communicate directly |
| Appointments | ✓ Schedule dental and ortho visits at the same location — sometimes the same day | ✗ Two offices, two schedules, two trips |
| Trust & Familiarity | ✓ Your child sees the same team from their first tooth through braces | ✗ Your child starts over with a new team when it's time for orthodontics |

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes RPDO different from other pediatric dentists in Richmond?
▾RPDO is one of the few bi-specialty practices in the Greater Richmond area, meaning we offer both pediatric dentistry and orthodontics under one roof. Your child can go from their first dental visit through braces and retainers without ever switching providers. We've also been serving Richmond families for over 100 years, we're privately owned (not a corporate chain), and we have five locations across Short Pump, West End, Mechanicsville, Midlothian, and Richmond.
What's the difference between a pediatric dentist and a family dentist?
▾A pediatric dentist completes two to three years of specialized training beyond dental school, focused specifically on the dental needs of infants, children, teens, and patients with special needs. This additional training covers child behavior management, growth and development, sedation techniques, and treating complex dental conditions in young patients.
What ages do you treat?
▾Our pediatric dentists see patients from infancy through adolescence — we recommend a first visit by age one. Our orthodontists treat children, teens, and adults. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial orthodontic evaluation by age seven.
Do you accept my insurance?
▾RPDO accepts most major dental insurance plans. We also offer flexible payment plans to help make treatment affordable. Our front desk team is happy to help you verify your benefits — just give us a call or request an appointment online.
Do you offer sedation for children who are anxious about the dentist?
▾Yes. We offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral sedation for children who experience anxiety or need additional help staying comfortable during treatment. Our pediatric dentists also use age-appropriate behavior management techniques.
Can my child get braces or Invisalign at the same practice where they see their dentist?
▾Absolutely — that's one of the biggest advantages of choosing RPDO. As a bi-specialty practice, your child's pediatric dentist and orthodontist are part of the same team. When it's time for braces or clear aligners, the transition is seamless.
Do you provide care for children with special needs?
▾Yes. Our pediatric dentists have specialized training in providing compassionate dental care for children with developmental, behavioral, or medical challenges. We offer sedation options and individualized approaches to ensure every child receives care in a safe, comfortable environment.
How do I schedule an appointment?
▾You can request an appointment online at any of our five locations, or call us directly. For pediatric dentistry, call (804) 741-2226. For orthodontics, call (804) 740-7281.
