Oral Health Appointments

Age 1 Dental Visit

Our practice follows the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation that children should see a dentist by their first birthday. This is important for the child and the parent to establish a dental home, discuss ways to prevent tooth decay, and establish good dietary and oral hygiene habits.

Initial Exams

Our initial exam includes an introduction to our staff and dentist, review of dental/medical history, soft tissue examination, polishing, scaling, necessary radiographs (x-rays), fluoride treatment, oral hygiene instruction, dental development evaluation, dietary and nutritional counseling and patient/parent education with a review of the dentist’s treatment plan.

Check-up Appointments

Regular return visits to our office are vitally important to keeping healthy teeth. Our check-up appointments include the same services as the initial exam but provide an opportunity to review the tools needed to remain cavity free.

For Special Needs Patients

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry defines persons with special health care needs as individuals who “have a physical, developmental, mental, sensory, behavioral, cognitive, or emotional impairment or limiting condition that requires medical management, health care intervention, and/or use of specialized services or programs.” The condition may be developmental or acquired and may cause limitations in performing daily self-maintenance activities or substantial limitations in a major life activity. Health care for special needs patients is beyond that considered routine and requires specialized knowledge, increased awareness, attention, and accommodation.

All of the pediatric dentists at our office specialize in treatment for patients with special health care needs. We understand that oral diseases can have a direct and devastating impact on the health of those with certain systemic health problems or conditions. Our practice will help manage the child with special health care needs by using known preventive and restorative techniques. We commit to help your family succeed in achieving dental health so that your child may develop to their maximum ability.

Our dentists participate in Dental Specialty Consultants of Virginia, a network of private practice dental specialists who provide comprehensive treatment to patients with craniofacial anomalies and systemic diseases affecting their oral and facial structures.
