Frequently Asked Questions For Orthodontic Emergencies

Properly handling an orthodontic emergency can be critical to maintaining your treatment progress and protecting your oral health. When unexpected issues arise, handling it effectively can make all the difference. We’ve compiled some of the most common orthodontic issues we see and their solutions below.

If a bracket or band comes loose but is still attached to the wire, try to leave it in place and apply orthodontic wax to reduce irritation. If it comes completely off, save the piece and bring it with you to your next appointment. Give us a call at (804) 740-7281 so we can determine if it needs to be fixed sooner.

Use a cotton swab or an eraser on a pencil to gently nudge the wire back into a more comfortable position. If that doesn’t work, place a small piece of orthodontic wax over the end of the wire to prevent it from poking. If it is still uncomfortable, give us a call or let us know at your next appointment!

If you notice a missing ligature (the small rubber band or wire that holds the bracket wire in place), call our office to see if it needs to be replaced. These ties help apply the correct pressure to your teeth, so we may recommend fixing it sooner rather than later.

While not an orthodontic emergency, this is completely normal! You may feel some discomfort for a few days after getting your braces on or following an adjustment. Rinsing with warm salt water, eating soft foods and using over-the-counter pain relievers as necessary can help manage it.

Braces can irritate the inside of your cheeks or lips, especially early on in your treatment journey. You can use orthodontic wax over any brackets causing discomfort and rinse with warm salt water to promote healing. If the sores don’t go away or worsen, contact us.

While this type of orthodontic emergency does not happen often, it is not unheard of. First, don’t panic. Call our office to request an appointment as soon as possible. Seek immediate medical assistance if you experience any trouble breathing.

Retention is an important phase of orthodontic treatment that protects your new smile by keeping it in place for years to come. If it breaks, we recommend getting a new one as soon as possible.

If you’ve experienced an orthodontic emergency involving trauma to the face, jaw or mouth, such as a sports injury or fall – contact our office right away. Even if your appliances appear intact, our orthodontist may perform a thorough examination to rule out damage to your teeth or appliances. Patients who suffer a jaw injury or a mouth injury with heavy bleeding should visit the emergency room right away.
