What To Expect During Your Child’s First Visit

You may be wondering when is the right time to bring your child in for their first visit with us at Richmond Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics. It may seem early, but the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry actually recommends your child have their first dental checkup by the age of one or after their first tooth comes in. The sooner your child is able to create healthy oral habits, the better! We believe early education leads to a foundation for healthy dental hygiene for years to come. Here is a brief overview of what you can expect during your child’s first visit:

  • Fun Experience: We believe the more comfortable your child is, the better experience they will have. That’s why each one of our offices is designed with kids in mind, creating a fun, positive atmosphere where they can learn about the benefits of good oral health.

  • Dental/Health History: We will go over your child’s complete dental, as well as their overall medical history. This will better prepare our team to make sure all oral health concerns are addressed properly.

  • Dental Exam & Cleaning: One of our kind, experienced pediatric dentists will take a look at your child’s mouth, gums and teeth to assess their health. If necessary, our team may take X-rays, as well. Following, we will clean your child’s teeth by gently removing any plaque or tartar buildup, polish them with toothpaste, floss and use a fluoride treatment. We will also take the time to provide you with some at-home tips and tricks to keep your child’s teeth healthy.

Preparing For Your Child’s First Visit

We believe the more you and your child know ahead of their first visit, the more calm they will be. There are several things you can do ahead of their appointment. We recommend you talk to your child about what to expect by showing them fun, educational videos or reading books about dental health. You may also find it beneficial to practice opening wide so they are used to having their mouth open for an extended period of time. Additionally, if your child has a favorite toy, we recommend bringing it with you as this can help them feel more comfortable in the exam chair. Parents can also prepare for this first visit by filling out our new patient forms ahead of time and jot down any questions you may have so you don’t forget!
