Brushing

Starting early with the right brushing habits can make all the difference in preventing cavities and keeping their teeth strong. Here’s a simple guide to help you care for your child’s teeth from infancy through their growing years.

  • Start Early: Begin cleaning your child’s teeth from birth by wiping their gums with a wet washcloth after feedings. Once teeth appear, use a soft baby toothbrush with non-fluoridated toothpaste.
  • Parental Assistance: Help your child brush until they can do it effectively on their own. Once they can spit out toothpaste, switch to fluoride toothpaste—using just a pea-sized amount.
  • Brushing Tips: Aim to brush for 2 minutes, twice a day—after breakfast and before bed. Make brushing fun with songs or a timer to ensure they brush for the right amount of time.
  • After Meals: Encourage brushing or at least rinsing with water after any meals or snacks throughout the day to keep teeth clean and healthy.

Flossing

Flossing is essential for removing plaque and bacteria from between the teeth in the areas that a toothbrush is not able to reach. Made from synthetic cord, dental floss is gently inserted between two adjoining teeth to clean these hard-to-reach spaces. Regular flossing helps eliminate cavity-causing plaque and bacteria, while also boosting blood flow to the gums, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease.

Mouth Rinses

Mouth rinses, also known as mouthwash, offer several benefits, including freshening breath, preventing or controlling tooth decay, and reducing plaque, gingivitis, and tartar buildup. While most mouth rinses are available over-the-counter, they should complement, not replace, brushing and flossing. Fluoride mouth rinses are not recommended for those who cannot spit them out. When choosing a mouth rinse, look for the ADA seal on the label to ensure the product’s safety and effectiveness.

Fluoride

Fluoride plays a crucial role in keeping your child’s teeth strong and healthy. It’s naturally found in city drinking water, many food products and is a common ingredient in toothpastes and mouth rinses. According to the CDC, fluoride varnish can prevent about one-third (33%) of cavities in the primary (baby) teeth! At our office, we use a fluoride varnish that is applied directly to your child’s teeth. By incorporating fluoride treatments into your child’s dental care routine, you’re taking an important step in maintaining their oral health and ensuring their smiles stay bright and cavity-free!

Sealants

Sealants provide a simple and effective way to safeguard your child’s smile! They are a durable plastic material that is applied to the grooved and pitted surfaces of the teeth, especially the chewing surfaces of the back teeth where most cavities in children are found. Applying sealants is a quick and straightforward process that can be done during your child’s initial visit or follow-up appointment. First, the tooth is cleaned, then a sealant material is applied to the grooves and hardened with a special curing light. While sealants are effective, they don’t last forever and may need to be replaced over time as they wear away.

Diets

A balanced diet is essential for your child’s overall well-being, including their dental health. Make sure to include a variety of foods from the five major food groups. Encourage healthy snacking between meals, like cheese, raw veggies, or fruit, as these options are less likely to cause tooth decay. Sugary snacks and drinks should be limited to mealtimes, as the acids they produce can attack teeth for 20 minutes or more. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests no more than 6-8 ounces of juice daily, with water being the best option between meals. By following these dietary guidelines, you can help ensure your child’s teeth stay healthy and strong, supporting their overall health and wellness!
