Where did you grow up?

I grew up in a (small) town in North Dakota called Grand Forks. It’s home to a major university and it’s population is around 55,000, so it’s a big city out there. We had most modern conveniences larger cities had, so it really didn’t seem rural. It was cold though, probably more so than you would expect!

Where did you go to high school?

I went to Red River High School in North Dakota. The mascot was the rough riders after Teddy Roosevelt who had a ranch in Dakota. I was involved in track and field, as well as cross country, band and AP classes.

Where did you go to college?

I went to college in the same town, the University of North Dakota, which is probably best known for its hockey team or it’s aerospace program. I had a great educational experience.

Where did you go to dental school?

I went to dental school at The University of Iowa. It was ranked in the top 3 dental schools in the country at the time and gave a level of education and experience that was really above and beyond.

Where did you go to school for orthodontics?

I came to Virginia for my residency in orthodontics. Medical college of Virginia or VCU Health System as it is now called.

How long have you been an Orthodontist?

21 years now. Wow it’s flown by!

What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not looking at teeth?

It’s a tossup between working on the house, a car, or a woodworking project. I’m always trying to fix something, making it as beautiful and functional as it can be!

What dental associations/study clubs are you involved in?

I’m currently a member of the ADA, AAO and VAO. I’m a member of the VCU Foundation and the Richmond Orthodontic Study Club.

What do you enjoy most about being an orthodontist?

I really like the problem solving part of it, even more so because it helps give someone a smile they want and deserve to have.
